October 24, 2015: Please note that on May 20, 2015 Google posted this notification on their ‘Official Webmaster Central Blog’: Announcing Google Search Console – the new Webmaster Tools
I’m going to assume in this video that you have already set up and verified your website in Google Webmaster tools.
This process shouldn’t matter as to which Content Management System (CMS), Plugin or Website builder you’ve used. The only thing that may be different here is the URL of your sitemap.
It’s a fairly straight-forward process but there is the possibility for crawl errors once your sitemap has been submitted. I’ll even be able to show you an example of what it looks like if an error has been detected during the submission process. That’s why it’s a good reason to test your sitemap URL before submitting it to Google.

Process for Submitting Sitemap in Google Webmaster Tools
Once I’m inside of the web property, there are always a few things I check out before doing much. I like to get an idea of any changes since my last login. What patterns do I notice? Does anything look “out of place” or irregular.
Since this video isn’t focusing on an overview of Webmaster Tools, I’ll spare you all the details.
If you have questions about, or would like to share your process of a Google Webmaster Tools Overview Process, email me through the website contact form at Cubicle10.
Let’s get this show on the road!
Locate the URL of Your Sitemap
Before signing in to Webmaster Tools, it’s a good idea to navigate to the URL of your Sitemap. If you’re unsure of how to do that or where to find your WordPress XML Sitemap, you may either read the “how-to” blog post or watch the 5.5 minute video on how to find your XML sitemap URL: Configuring XML Sitemap Setting Using SEO WordPress Plugin by Yoast
Log In to Your Google Webmaster Tools Account
- Open another web browser or browser tab and log in to your Google Webmaster Tools account
- Click on the website for which you’d like to submit a sitemap
- Next, look on the left hand side of your page for a menu
- Click on Crawl
- Click Sitemaps
Testing and Submitting Your Sitemap
- Click the red button labeled “Add/Test Sitemap” (upper right corner)
- A small text box will appear. This is where you’ll enter the URL of your sitemap. For me, it’s sitemap_index.xml. You only need to copy the part of the URL that comes after the .com/ and paste it into the text box in Webmaster Tools.
Shortcut for Windows Users
To copy, press CTRL and C. To paste, press CTRL + V.
Shortcut for Mac Users
Instead of CTRL, press your COMMAND Key.
To Test Your Sitemap
Simply press Test Sitemap
To Submit Your Sitemap
Click on Blue Submit Sitemap button
If you test your sitemap first, then you’ll repeat the exact same steps as before to submit it, except this time you’ll click on Submit sitemap.
Once You’ve Submitted a Sitemap to Google
You should see a horizontal notification along the top-middle portion of your screen. You’ll want to click on REFRESH.
The status may say pending, in which case you are safe to navigate away from the page and can always check back later.
That’s it – you’re done.
